Michael Flanderka, Managing Director & CEO, Data Interactive
Being an entrepreneur is a bit like sailing. You’re out there in the vast ocean, chasing your dreams, and suddenly, storms roll in. But the true test of an entrepreneur isn’t dodging these storms; it’s about facing them head-on, bouncing back, and coming out even stronger. There are times when going gets tough and giving up seems like the only viable option. Life throws curveballs that test our resilience and shake the very core of our existence. But despite all the odds, true leaders don’t hit pause; they pivot, find new routes, and keep hustling forward, inspiring us all along the way. In our quest to find such resilient leaders for our upcoming edition at APAC Entrepreneur, we stumbled upon the inspiring story of one such exemplary leader, Michael Flanderka, the Managing Director and CEO of Data Interactive.
Michael always had a deep-rooted passion for business that led him to earn a degree in Commerce and become a qualified Chartered Accountant. His career soared with a prestigious accounting firm in Australia, where he discovered a niche interest in Tax, ultimately becoming a national expert. However, life took an unexpected turn when he tragically lost his wife to a rare cancer. This sudden and devastating loss forced Michael to take a step back and reassess his priorities. He had been climbing the corporate ladder, giving his all to work and family. But in just 8 weeks, everything changed. This wake-up call taught him that life is not a rehearsal, and that time is indeed priceless.
So, after weathering the storm of personal loss and adapting to his new role as a single father to two young children, Michael redirected his focus toward creating a lasting legacy. While he had a thriving career and a comfortable income, he sought a deeper purpose. Combining his love for business, systems, and technology, he decided to explore how to ‘unlock time’ by working smarter, not harder. Subsequently, in 2015/16, Michael stumbled upon the global trend of ‘business automation.’ Intrigued, he dived into research, eager to explore how this technology could transform businesses. Convinced of its transformative power, he took the plunge and founded the Data Interactive Group. Today, the sole goal of Data Interactive is to transform and optimize businesses by making their data ‘interactive’ via cutting-edge technology such as AI, robotics, and low-code Automation solutions.
Where Expert Advice Meets Genuine Commitment
In the vast sea of opportunities and the ever-rising tide of technological platforms, businesses seek a guiding North Star—someone who can understand where they are now, where they want to get to, and most importantly how to get them to their end goals and beyond. This is where Data Interactive steps in, standing out in the market by offering expert consulting advisory services. Their mission is clear: to cut through the clamor of technology options and vendor promises, ensuring that the Automation Roadmap aligns seamlessly with the unique needs of each business.
What sets Data Interactive apart is its commitment to adopting an AI and Automation best-fit ‘toolkit’ approach. Unlike the conventional mindset of buying one broad platform for all needs, they focus on leveraging a cutting-edge technology stack that can integrate and interface into many use cases from simple solutions to more complex needs. Yet, their dedication to clients doesn’t stop at technology solutions. Beyond providing expert advice and a versatile toolkit, they focus on the customer value proposition. From flexible pricing structures to embodying the ethos of “Think Big, Start Small, Execute Fast,” they employ a ‘lean in’ philosophy to ensure that client needs are not just met but exceeded. At the heart of Data Interactive’s business philosophy are three core tenets: trust, transparency, and transformational outcomes. These values permeate every aspect of the company’s operations, fostering a culture where clients not only receive cutting-edge solutions but also experience a genuine commitment to their success.
Conquering Challenges with Heart and Grit
Michael’s journey into the world of AI and automation has been a wild ride, filled with hurdles that tested not just their professional skills but also his personal grit. One formidable challenge for Michael was the transition from being a reliable tax expert to diving headfirst into the unexplored waters of automation. This shift required not just a change in skills but also a whole lot of self-confidence, a strong belief in what he was doing, and a never-give-up attitude. “I have always had a philosophy if you’re going to do something in a ‘niche/specialist area’ make sure that you go all in and become an expert that people can trust, not just do things halfway,” asserts Michael.
Another big challenge for Michael was battling doubts. People, or that nagging voice in his head, questioned every step he took. Should he stick to what he knows, and be content? That was the easy route, the safer bet. But for Michael, life isn’t just about playing it safe all the time. He firmly believes that real growth comes from using what you know to make a tangible impact on others. “In my chosen area of AI and automation, there are real and significant opportunities to have an impact on individuals, businesses, and communities and if I have been blessed with the knowledge, insights, and capabilities to see these opportunities, it’s my obligation to keep going with my message to embrace ‘emerging technologies’ to unlock human potential and growth,” he adds.
A Rock-solid Anchor in Michael’s Entrepreneurial Sail
Reflecting on his remarkable journey, Michael earnestly attributes his success to the unwavering support of his family, particularly the pivotal role played by his second wife, Shannon. Initially, climbing the corporate ladder with the unwavering support of his first wife, Michael faced a significant setback with her untimely passing. He then had both his young children and his wife’s older children to work hard for and he was determined to provide for them – but it was a juggle and would get tiring. Though the children served as a great source of motivation for him to keep going, he soon realized the isolation that comes with the entrepreneurial journey. No office, staff, or a ‘tribe’—just him against the entrepreneurial current. That’s where Shannon stepped in, not just as a life partner but as a rock-solid anchor accepting and supporting Michael’s work ethic and his vision for innovation – enabling Michael to be ‘him’. “The entrepreneurial journey can often be like a sea voyage. You start with many hopes, you set your compass for the land over the horizon and on the journey, there can be smooth sailing as well as wind, waves and waterspouts! The need for stability and some fundamental ‘anchors’ in your life as an entrepreneur is so important,” elucidates Michael.
When asked about balancing personal and professional life, Michael credits Shannon for being the linchpin. Beyond handling the household and family responsibilities, Shannon ensures Michael takes breaks, stays organized with social events, and has clean clothes to wear! This support allows Michael to fully immerse himself in his entrepreneurial pursuits, exploring new technologies and expanding his skills. As business travel increases, Shannon remains the grounding force, reminding Michael to prioritize personal time and self-care, even going as far as scheduling much-needed massages for him.
Leading with Humanity and Purpose
When it comes to leadership, Michael’s philosophy is simple: Treat people the way you want to be treated. A good leader, according to Michael, must be congruent, act with clarity, and possess conviction. He also underscores the importance of the art of listening—using two ears and one mouth in proportion, emphasizing the value of understanding before being understood. In an era dominated by technology and automation, Michael advocates for leaders to be ‘good at being human’ and, fundamentally, ‘good humans.’ “I’ve found that throughout my career when I have adopted this approach, inspiring and motivating teams to reach the common goals is a lot easier because they know you have their back just as much as they have yours,” shares Michael.
Navigating the intricate roles of Entrepreneur, Investor, and Founder, Michael candidly admits that finding a perfect balance is elusive. Thus, the key, he reveals, lies not in a delicate balance but in a purposeful ‘blend’ of work and life. He strives to give 100% to each endeavor within the time available and surround himself with individuals who can further drive value with strategic direction.
Stepping into the Future with Disruptive Solutions
Looking forward, Michael envisions a future where Data Interactive and his new ventures not only seize forthcoming opportunities but also become a business under management. This he believes will let him focus more on his own charity and make a bigger impact in the not-for-profit world. Michael’s enthusiasm is fueled by his love for uncovering hidden potential in businesses (and not-for-profit organizations) through technology. Having already invested in various AI solutions and initiated sweat equity partnerships with industry experts, Michael is actively bringing tangible AI solutions to life. These ventures are poised to digitally disrupt specific sectors, marking a momentous chapter in history that he is thrilled to be part of.As a leader in the industry, Michael advises emerging entrepreneurs to know their “Why?”— Why do they want to be an entrepreneur, why do they believe in their product/service/solution, and why should other people believe in them? This, he believes, is their anchor during the rollercoaster ride of entrepreneurship. Michael also highlights the need for personal growth, understanding their strengths and weaknesses, and practicing self-care. “The more you know you, the more you will attract those you need to grow you. Find a good mentor, listen, and apply. Remember, the new idea/initiative may be amazing, but in the beginning your team, your customers, your investors will be buying ‘you’ – believe in yourself and stay humble, “concludes Michael.
