Kirsten O’Connor, Founder & Director, Quest
Today, we have the distinct privilege of introducing Kirsten O’Connor, a remarkable visionary in the realm of education in Tokyo, who has been diligently pioneering positive change through her educational venture, QUEST. Established in 2018, QUEST aims at bridging educational voids in the community. Initially a modest endeavor, QUEST has since grown, symbolizing Kirsten’s unfaltering allegiance to educational excellence and integration.
Kirsten’s journey is not only inspiring but also thought-provoking for all the women entrepreneurs in the APAC region. Trained as a teacher during her university years, Kirsten honed her skills for seven years in the bustling classrooms of London. In 2001, she ventured to Tokyo, driven by an international job opportunity at the British School. Her dedication and commitment propelled her through various leadership roles at the school. Over the course of 17 years, she served as a Head of Department, Deputy Head, and eventually Head Teacher of the Primary School. During this time, Kirsten astutely identified urgent gaps in the city’s educational landscape. Tokyo’s international community grappled with a significant language barrier, seeking support for their children’s learning, and guidance on navigating the intricacies of bilingual and special education.
QUEST for Inclusive Learning
QUEST initially started as a solo endeavor, primarily offering tutoring services to students aged five to 18, mainly framed within the English National Curriculum. The subjects of focus included English, mathematics, and science. However, with time, the company identified a growing demand for other subjects, as well as rapid English language development, particularly from families aiming to enroll their children in international schools but encountering language barriers. In a pivotal moment in 2021, QUEST introduced its Learning Support division. Originally conceived as a five-year goal, it was expedited due to the pressing community need. This division extended crucial support in social skills and therapy to children with conditions such as ADHD and those on the autistic spectrum. As time progressed, Kirsten expanded her team to encompass five therapists specializing in speech therapy, physical therapy, behavior therapy, and psychology support.
Kirsten’s overarching vision is to construct an all-encompassing, tapestry support network for children and their families. QUEST offers assessments, guidance, therapy services, and a nurturing community, aspiring to be the central destination for families seeking educational support. What distinguishes QUEST is its deeply personalized approach. Kirsten personally meets with each prospective client, engaging in thorough discussions regarding their unique needs. QUEST places strong emphasis on tailoring its responses to meet the distinct requirements of each family and child. Furthermore, QUEST collaborates closely with schools, aiding them in accommodating students with specific learning needs, thus contributing to a more inclusive educational environment in Tokyo.
Overcoming Hurdles in a Foreign Business Landscape
Kirsten O’Connor, the driving force behind QUEST and QUEST Learning Support and Therapy (QLST), embarked on her entrepreneurial journey in Tokyo, facing a unique set of obstacles. One of the foremost challenges was the language barrier inherent in Japan’s business landscape. Establishing a company there, while technically feasible, becomes an unnerving task when confronted with the complexities of Japanese business laws and banking systems, especially if one doesn’t speak the language. Ensuring the correct legal structure and maintaining cash flow presented significant hurdles. To surmount these challenges, Kirsten sought out seasoned advisors and specialists. Legal and financial experts provided essential guidance in navigating the intricacies of business setup and registration in a foreign land.
As QUEST grew, recruitment became another formidable challenge. Finding skilled specialists capable of addressing a diverse range of learning needs and subjects required diligent effort. Moreover, like businesses worldwide, QUEST wrestled with the ever-present challenge of securing adequate funding to support its growth and development. Yet, Kirsten’s devotion to her vision and the meticulous preparation that preceded QUEST’s establishment proved invaluable. Her deep expertise in education, sharpened during her tenure as a headteacher, enabled her to offer professional insights and tailor services to meet families’ specific needs. The most rewarding aspect of Kirsten’s entrepreneurial journey has been the opportunity to assist families in need of highly specialized, special education support. Witnessing children make strides, gain entry to top schools, and aid families in surmounting learning obstacles fuels Kirsten’s steadfast dedication to QUEST’s mission.

Her team, though diverse in nationality and background, shares a common thread of values, aligning seamlessly with the company’s mission.
Recruitment at QUEST follows rigorous international and UK standards for safeguarding, ensuring thorough background checks for all team members. The selection process includes multiple interview stages, culminating in in-depth discussions about education, values, and the role each team member plays in fulfilling QUEST’s mission. Despite being a robust team now, Kirsten remains deeply involved, maintaining an open line of trust and communication with her team. She describes herself and her senior team as “backing singers” to the tutors and therapists, always ready to harmoniously support, assist and guide when needed. In the face of challenges, particularly the impact of COVID-19, Kirsten and her team have adapted. They’ve added online teaching skills to their teaching toolkit, and fostered a sense of community among the tutors and therapists, who mainly work with individual clients. Team events and office gatherings have become a source of shared enthusiasm and commitment to their mission.
Kirsten’s leadership philosophy places a strong emphasis on open and honest communication, both in recognizing achievements and addressing areas for improvement.
