Dr. Mel Baker, Founder, Living Your Wellbeing
In the rough and tumble of life, we all face our fair share of setbacks, hardships, and even trauma that can leave us feeling battered and bruised. Life’s punches can indeed hit hard, tempting us to drown in self-pity, wallowing in our woes, and grappling with the weight of our struggles. Yet, amidst this tempest, there are the resilient few who not only weather the storm but emerge stronger, using their own trials as a springboard to uplift others. They become beacons of hope, turning their pain into purpose. One such inspiring trailblazer who has transformed her adversities into a catalyst for empowering others is Dr. Mel Baker, an educator, a multifaceted storyteller, filmmaker, podcaster, and the visionary founder of Unchain Your Wellbeing, a sanctuary of hope, healing, and empowerment. Having conquered unimaginable adversities – childhood abuse, homelessness, domestic violence, adult trauma, mental health battles, and identity crises – Dr. Baker has alchemized her suffering into an empowering message of healing, resilience, and hope– qualities that now form the bedrock of her mission.
The Beginning of ‘Living Your Wellbeing’
The genesis of ‘Unchain Your Wellbeing’ traces back to 2009, when Dr. Baker immersed herself in doctoral research, where she focused on supporting frontline police officers dealing with trauma. She created an ethnographic model that examined how our identities intertwine with our professional roles, a study that spanned five international police forces. This comprehensive research provided a deep understanding of how trauma impacts individuals within high-stress professions. Yet, it was her own battle with trauma during her service in the Royal Australian Navy that truly shaped her path. Drawing from both her research and personal experiences, Dr. Baker developed a holistic wellbeing model that considers every facet of our being. This model, the most comprehensive of its kind, laid the groundwork for Unchain Your Wellbeing. She rigorously tested these tools on herself, rebuilding her life and regaining confidence, self-worth, and purpose after losing everything in her 40s.
Since she was 17, Dr. Baker has been driven by a clear purpose: to empower and inspire others who have faced trauma. As an international speaker, Dr. Baker has traveled to 56 countries, starting her first international speaking engagement in Papua New Guinea at the age of 18. Unlike many, when she stands on stage, she comes alive. Where many find trepidation, she finds her element, channeling her energy to connect deeply with the audience. From seeing change in adults facing adversity in Uganda to empowering youth in Indonesia, her passion and calling to speak into people’s lives form the foundation of all her work. To her, speaking engagements are an important part of her purpose and why she continues to inspire hope and recovery in those who need it most. Her journey to find the right modality for her future was challenging, but it led to the creation of Unchain Your Wellbeing, soon to be known as Living Your Wellbeing—a program dedicated to helping others heal from within and reclaim their lives.
Conquering Challenges Along the Way
Launching ‘Living Your Wellbeing’ was truly a journey marked by both triumphs and obstacles for Dr Baker. One of the initial hurdles she encountered was the recruitment of participants which posed a dual challenge – finding individuals willing to open up about their trauma experiences, as well as enlisting individuals with no mental health disorders for comparison. While she was able to reach out to trauma survivors like military veterans and first responders, given her own background and connections, engaging a control group proved to be more arduous. However, through perseverance and community outreach, she succeeded in assembling a diverse cohort of over 200 adults, laying a solid foundation for future assessments.
Validation and feedback played a crucial role in Dr. Baker’s journey. The manager of Homes for Heroes, where Dr. Baker stayed after her medical discharge, embraced her wellbeing model and used the assessment himself. This opened the door for Dr. Baker to integrate her holistic assessment into their program. As she continued to test and refine the model, she provided empowering support to other veterans, building confidence in its effectiveness. “Balancing the holistic approach required constant refinement that I continued to do on myself for many years before other organisations started to utilise my services. The transformative stories of participants who’ve rebuilt their lives using my tools are a testament to its success,” shares Dr Baker.
Redefining Wellbeing through a Holistic Assessment Model
The hallmark of Living Your Wellbeing lies in its pioneering holistic assessment model that evaluates multiple dimensions of the human experience. This comprehensive approach includes a personal, communal, environmental, and transcendental foundation; physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual core responses; and vocational, external, and recreational needs.“The assessment determines the stability of one’s foundation, daily functionality, and whether their needs are being met. It also provides internal and external validations, culminating in a ‘whole self’ score and an overall well-being score. This detailed feedback empowers individuals to improve their wellbeing,” elucidates Dr. Baker.
She understands that there’s no one-size-fits-all solution to wellbeing, and her model reflects this belief, empowering individuals to take meaningful steps toward healing and fulfillment. Furthermore, the versatility of the model extends beyond individual use; organizations like equine-assisted services for military veterans and first responders have integrated Dr. Baker’s assessment into their programs, yielding invaluable insights for both participants and organizers alike. But Dr. Baker’s innovative spirit doesn’t stop there. She’s recently developed a groundbreaking risk-assessment tool for PTSD assistance dogs, garnering international attention and acclaim. In fact, she was asked to speak at the Assistance Dog International Conference in Croatia in September 2023 with many international organisations interested in utilising her unique tool.
Assembling a Mission-Driven Team
When it comes to building her team at Living Your Wellbeing, Dr. Baker doesn’t just look for skilled professionals or contractors. Rather, she carefully selects partners who share the same passion and commitment to the mission. By hiring individuals who are not only proficient in their respective fields but also embody empathy, resilience, and a genuine dedication to personal development and mental health, Dr. Baker cultivates a dynamic and supportive environment. This team-centric approach ensures that every participant receives the best possible guidance and support, making meaningful strides toward improved wellbeing. Additionally, Dr. Baker looks for team members who are adaptable and capable of seamlessly integrating her innovative wellbeing model into diverse settings, from mental health facilities to clinics and veteran communities. “While I may be the driving force, it’s the collective effort with these skilled individuals that amplifies the impact of Living Your Wellbeing,” asserts Dr. Baker.
Striking the Balance: Work, Life, and Wellbeing
Balancing a demanding entrepreneurial career with a fulfilling personal life is no easy feat, but Dr. Mel Baker navigates this challenge with remarkable grace and purpose. As an entrepreneur, her work spans various fields, from spearheading Living Your Wellbeing to authoring books, creating an award-winning short film, and hosting insightful podcasts. But unlike many who pursue entrepreneurial ventures for fame or fortune, Dr. Baker is driven by a deeper calling: the genuine desire to serve and create a positive impact. For her, Living Your Wellbeing isn’t just a business; it’s a conduit for healing, hope, and transformation.“I’d rather invest in people’s lives than accumulate wealth. For me, success isn’t measured solely in financial gains or awards; it’s about the positive impact we create,” she affirms.
While her short film has garnered over 60 international awards, Dr. Baker finds the greatest fulfillment in witnessing its transformative effect on viewers. This commitment to service is mirrored in her approach to self-care, a practice she wholeheartedly embraced following a period of personal trauma. Staying true to her ethos, she prioritizes nurturing her own wellbeing by living in the present moment, meditating daily, and connecting with nature. These practices enable her to effectively manage her workload while nurturing her own needs, ensuring that she remains energized and focused on her mission.

Her diverse career path, spanning from graphic artist to chaplain, has profoundly shaped her approach to Living Your Wellbeing. While pursuing her doctoral thesis, she worked as Lead Chaplain & Educator for Post Trauma Support in the NSW Police Force.
