A limp paw, a hesitant step, a subtle change in appetite—our pets speak without words. These quiet signals often go unnoticed, dismissed as mere habits or fleeting moods. But the truth is, each of their gesture carries meaning, a subtle call for care, understanding, and attention. Observing these signs is not easy; it demands patience, insight, and a willingness to see beyond the obvious—qualities that separate routine care from true, holistic understanding. It is this very challenge—the delicate balance between noticing symptoms and addressing underlying needs—that inspired Dr. Jean-Paul Ly to rethink veterinary care. A seasoned veterinarian and animal welfare expert with more than 50 years of experience, Dr. Jean-Paul Ly has devoted his career to bridging traditional veterinary medicine with holistic approaches. From developing innovative pet foods and nutraceuticals to establishing cutting-edge veterinary facilities, Dr. Ly’s work reflects a profound commitment to enhancing the health, well-being, and quality of life of every companion animal he encounters.
A New Frontier in Veterinary Medicine
Born in Vietnam to a French-educated Chinese journalist father and a Manchurian mother of royal lineage, Dr. Jean’s early years were marked by a rich blend of Eastern and Western influences. When his family migrated to Singapore in 1952, Dr. Ly was still a young boy, absorbing a new culture while holding close the legacy of his roots. Years later, in 1966, his journey took him to Australia, where he pursued his studies in veterinary science and became a naturalized Australian citizen a decade later, in 1976. But in between those milestones came a turning point. In 1972, Dr. Ly took a year off to care for his ailing mother—a deeply personal decision that would later define his professional ethos. During this time, he volunteered at the University of Singapore’s physiology department, assisting in one of the earliest animal acupuncture research projects. The experience exposed him to the depth and wisdom of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), particularly when integrated with the logic and precision of allopathic science. He trained formally in Chinese acupuncture in both Singapore and Beijing that same year, developing techniques that were virtually unheard of in the veterinary field at the time. Driven by curiosity, he began applying acupuncture principles to his research animal models—long before veterinary acupuncture was even recognized as a discipline in the 1960s. The results were nothing short of transformative. The experience not only validated the potential of acupuncture in animal healing but also expanded his understanding of medicine itself. It taught him to look at disease management, not only from pure symptomatic treatment as in many allopathic approaches, but to look at possible causes and influences from the internal and external environments. Decades later, that insight continues to guide his practice as a veterinary surgeon and practitioner.
After several years of teaching at Sydney Technical College and managing two veterinary hospitals, Dr. Ly returned to Singapore in 1983 to co-found The Animal Clinic, which became one of the nation’s largest veterinary practices. Alongside clinical practice, he pursued diverse interests, earning a Diploma in Bible Studies in 1986, co-founding the Student and Youth Advisory Service (SAYAS), launching ALJEANS Seafood Supply and pioneering Singapore’s first cold-water life-support systems for lobsters and crabs. Over the years, he’s worn many hats: author, counselor, designer, and pioneer in veterinary medicine. Today, as CEO of REGEN X and Animal Wellness Regenerative Medicine Laboratory, Dr. Ly continues to shape the future of animal health across Asia — driven by the same vision that has guided him all along: to restore life and hope through science.
Filling the Void in Animal Supplements
In the 1990s, while practicing allopathic veterinary medicine, Dr. Jean Ly began searching for natural products and herbal supplements that could complement conventional treatments. To his surprise, most of what he found was poorly formulated and primarily designed for human use. At the time, he was serving as the regional veterinary consultant for IAMS Pet Food International—a role that gave him deep insight into the nutritional needs of animals and the glaring lack of holistic alternatives available in the market. Motivated to close that gap, Dr. Ly pursued a Diploma in Clinical Nutrition at the International School of Nutrition, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his professional journey. In 2000, alongside his longtime friend Mr. Jerel Kwek, he set out to develop the first truly holistic and novel protein range of pet foods – the ADDICTION brand. Manufactured in one of the world’s cleanest countries, the ADDICTION range stood out for its purity, high-quality proteins, and the use of pristine water sources, setting new benchmarks in natural pet nutrition. Drawing upon his foundation in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Clinical Nutrition, and veterinary science, Dr. Ly went on to develop a series of nutraceuticals designed to complement and enhance allopathic therapies. The success of these early formulations inspired the launch of Jean-Paul Nutraceuticals in the late 2000s—a brand dedicated to disease prevention and holistic care. What made these nutraceuticals unique was their precise formulation: highly concentrated natural herbal ingredients blended with minimal fillers to deliver maximum efficacy in a single dose. Produced in GMP-certified facilities, they offered safety, trust, and convenience—eliminating the need for pet owners to juggle multiple supplements. To further accommodate the difficulties in dosing many species and breeds, some nutraceuticals were developed in the form of powder, pills, and palatable liquids, bringing a new level of accessibility to holistic veterinary care. All the ingredients in Dr. Ly’s three flagship nutraceuticals are thoroughly researched and well-documented. Dr. Ly often emphasizes, “There is no ‘magic bullet’ in healing—whether in Traditional Chinese Medicine or veterinary science. It takes a thoughtful combination of herbs or drugs to achieve a targeted therapeutic outcome.”
Extending Human-Grade Care to Animal Companions
In 2015, Dr. Jean-Paul Ly founded Pet Health Global with a clear mission: to provide safe, effective, and affordable solutions for the holistic management of animal health and wellness. Under the brand Jean-Paul Nutraceuticals, the company develops safe, effective, and affordable human-grade nutraceuticals designed specifically for companion animals. “Our pets have been a huge part of our lives and are part of our family. We need to sustain their health with the right pet health products. At Pet Health Global, we develop nutraceutical pet wellness products that are novel, safe, and effective in the management and prevention of common companion animal ailments,” shares Dr. Ly.
Through meticulous research, Dr. Ly has formulated products that support digestive health, cardiovascular function, joint mobility, weight management, and coat wellbeing. Only the highest-grade natural ingredients are used, harnessing the wisdom of nature to address a variety of conditions. These nutraceuticals are carefully blended without excessive fillers, artificial flavors, or coloring, and many are produced in GMP-certified facilities—ensuring that the same rigorous safety and quality standards applied to human medicines are extended to pets. In addition to developing its own line of supplements, Pet Health Global collaborates with like-minded businesses like Amazing Grace Thailand, Natural Pet Singapore, Pet Lovers group Singapore, Amber Compounding Singapore and Alpha Medic Hong Kong to conduct clinical trials and distribute innovative products, all with the goal of advancing the overall health and wellbeing of companion animals.
A Wholistic Approach to Animal Care
Building on the insights gained from decades of veterinary practice and the development of Jean-Paul Nutraceuticals, Dr. Ly created the Animal Wellness Group, an integrated treatment facility that began as a clinic in 2021 and expanded into a full-fledged hospital by 2023. The facility goes far beyond conventional care, offering solutions for patients who have run out of standard options. In partnership with two research teams from the National University of Singapore—Professor Too’s experimental cell therapy program and Professor Daniel Teh’s photodynamic therapy research, Dr. Ly brings cutting-edge treatments to his patients, from stem cell and immune cell therapy to other innovative interventions. But innovation does not stop at experimental therapies. The facility also provides a wide range of safe, complementary treatments, including cryosurgery, laser therapy, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, acupuncture, clinical nutrition counselling, and BodyTalk. By combining advanced science with holistic principles, Dr. Ly and his team create a truly integrative care model—one that addresses illness while nurturing overall wellbeing.
When the World Resists, Stay the Course
As an entrepreneur driving change in the veterinary profession, Dr. Ly openly acknowledges the challenges and criticisms he has faced. “I must admit that I face many challenges and criticisms, especially amongst my own colleagues, at times feeling defeated. They will accuse you of grandstanding, of not adhering to the ‘acceptable’ code of practice. Do not feel defeated, but do what you believe in, and the rest will eventually follow,” he affirms.
These experiences have only reinforced his belief in the power of perseverance. “Innovation is never easy, and those who challenge convention will always face resistance. Yet criticism is often a sign that you are pushing boundaries, exploring new possibilities, and creating meaningful impact,” he explains. History, he points out, is full of pioneers who were initially scorned, attacked, or even ostracized by their peers—yet their ideas endured, reshaped their fields, and ultimately changed the world. Thus, he encourages young veterinarians and entrepreneurs to embrace courage over conformity—to stay true to their vision even when the world resists it. A prolific speaker and published author, Dr. Ly has lectured extensively across Asia on topics ranging from veterinary medicine and clinical nutrition to family counseling, leadership, and management. His lifelong mission is to elevate Asian veterinary practice to global standards, integrate holistic approaches into animal care, and pioneer innovative treatments that address the complete wellbeing of animals. In a world where animals cannot speak for themselves, Dr. Jean-Paul Ly has devoted his voice—and his vision—to reimagining what it truly means to heal. For him, healing is more than science—it is a lifelong commitment to empathy, innovation, and the belief that every living being deserves a life of balance, comfort, and care.
