Toff Lee, Founder and CEO, HillEver
Although our age is steeped in technology, it has never truly been about machines. It has always been about people — how they live, work, move, and dream in an increasingly automated world. And only a few have brought this truth to life with as much conviction and depth as Toff Lee, the founder and CEO of HillEver, a Taiwan-based pioneer in smart self-service solutions.
When he speaks, Toff Lee’s words carry the firmness of a leader who has seen industries transform from the ground up. There’s no flamboyance in his tone, no self-proclaimed genius—just a deep, methodical clarity that only decades of experience can bring.
For more than 30 years, Toff has stood at the intersection of technology, design, and human purpose, leading HillEver, with one unwavering belief that “The value of technology is not in showing off, but in its ability to truly improve people’s lives.”
That belief has defined not only his company’s evolution but also his own philosophy of leadership and innovation—measured, human, and significantly forward-looking. Over three decades of quiet yet groundbreaking leadership, Lee has reimagined technology not as a spectacle of progress, but as an instrument of human possibility.
The Restlessness That Started It All
“When I first entered the workforce,” he recalls, “I had a typical 9-to-5 job. The pay was low, the pace of life was fixed—but deep down, I felt that if life was only about doing things ‘well’ and not making things ‘fundamentally different,’ it would be too boring,” Lee reflects.
And it was this restlessness that became the spark that created ripples in a world that has grown uncomfortably predictable.
He first ventured into the mail-order industry, which he calls the “earliest prototype of e-commerce.” The business introduced him to the invisible backbone of modern industry: supply chains, logistics, and customer management. In handling the tangible movement of goods, Toff discovered the intangible essence of progress — automation. It wasn’t just about machines doing more; it was about humans imagining better.
What began as curiosity evolved into conviction. And Lee developed a lifelong fascination with process efficiency and scalable design. That foundation became the seed of HillEver— though, as fate would have it, the company’s defining chapter would begin in a completely different field.
A Serendipitous Pivot
When a major Canadian brand came seeking a Taiwanese design partner, Toff accepted, unaware it would redirect his entire trajectory. This collaboration thrust him into the rigorous world of game machine design and hardware development— a training ground far tougher than any classroom.
The Canadian client’s uncompromising standards demanded excellence at every level: design precision, mechanical logic, quality assurance, and delivery consistency. Toff and his team had to evolve overnight — from enthusiastic entrepreneurs into international-grade professionals.
Those years, he admits, were brutal yet transformative. “We had to rebuild everything from scratch — our design, our supply chain, even our way of thinking.” But that experience shaped the very DNA of HillEver — precision, discipline, and resilience.
From there, Toff began seeking a new growth curve. He sensed that self-service and automation were not mere trends, but the next industrial revolution. Gradually, HillEver transformed from an OEM/ODM manufacturer into a total smart-solution provider — designing, integrating, and mass-producing intelligent systems for retail, logistics, and beyond.
The journey from game machines to smart lockers may seem vast, but at its heart lies a single question: How can technology serve humanity better?
From Hardware to Human Experience
HillEver’s transformation from a game machine manufacturer into a global innovator in kiosks, vending machines, and smart lockers wasn’t simply a business move—it was a cultural shift.
By consolidating expertise across design, R&D, system integration, and production, HillEver became one of the few companies in Taiwan capable of providing end-to-end solutions in smart automation. But Toff’s vision reached far beyond machinery. He saw technology as an extension of humanity, not a substitute for it.
“Driven by smart technology, my vision is to build a new retail ecosystem centered on people,” he says. “Technology should naturally integrate into sustainable life.”
This philosophy found powerful expression during the pandemic years. As contact-based services became restricted and e-commerce boomed, Toff initiated a bold collaboration with Shopee, one of Asia’s largest e-commerce platforms.
“I directly proposed the concept of “unmanned stores” and “fully automated self-service” to Shopee,” he recalls. “Starting from the very first prototype machine, we discussed usage scenarios, traffic, flow, operation procedures, and safety mechanisms with Shopee, step-by-step transforming the concept into a scalable solution.”
This partnership not only accelerated HillEver’s rise as a key player in smart logistics and retail automation but also validated its deeper belief: that the company’s true strength lies in transforming technology from “feasible” to “deployable.”
Leadership: A Journey of ‘Walking Together’
When asked about leadership, Toff never speaks in corporate cliches. Instead, he illuminates a deeper truth that the real worth of progress lies not in lone brilliance but in collective achievement. “How far a company can go is not just about strategy,” he says, “but about whether a group of people can walk together.”
For him, HillEver is not merely a workplace—it’s a “home” built on shared trust and effort. He often reminds his team: “How far a person can go depends on who they walk with.”
That belief permeates the company culture. When challenges arise, Toff leads with presence— rolls up his sleeves and joins the frontlines. Within the organization, he encourages a mindset of “finding solutions, not excuses,” invoking historical figures like Zhuge Liang and Guan Yu as metaphors for courage and resilience.
This combination of empathy and discipline has shaped HillEver into a company that thrives on curiosity, creativity, and the courage to break boundaries—qualities that have allowed it to adapt across three decades of relentless technological change.
Strength, Solitude, and the Gobi Desert
Beyond the boardroom, Toff doesn’t indulge in cozy retreats; instead, he works on restoring equilibrium through endurance. He attributes leisure to exercises and extreme pursuits.
“For me, exercise is not leisure; it is an important method for keeping myself in peak condition,” he shares.
Lee’s participation in the NTU EMBA Gobi Challenge — a grueling marathon across one of the world’s toughest terrains- taught him lessons no business school could. The Gobi became both metaphor and mirror. Each step through its relentless dunes tested resilience, fortitude, and an indomitable will to continue. In every stride, he saw a reflection of his entrepreneurial journey — navigating through impossibilities, uncertainty, and fatigue.
To give it a sense of mission, he links exercise with charity. He pledges NT$100 for every kilometer completed, donating nearly NT$300,000 to the Children’s Cancer Foundation and continuing with over NT$1 million in subsequent years.
In those moments of exhaustion and solitude, Toff found his inner dialogue: “If you are willing to do it, there is nothing that cannot be done.”
It is this quiet grace and a sense of gratitude that gives him the strength to revive after every trial of fatigue and faith —steady, self-assured, and focused.
Looking Ahead: The Courage to Evolve
As HillEver continues to expand its reach across retail, e-commerce, and medical sectors, its mission remains clear: to build a globally competitive, people-centered, sustainable automation ecosystem.
The company’s success has earned it recognition, including the 2023 Golden Ship Award, honoring its innovation and international impact. But Toff remains grounded, more focused on progress than prestige.
“The brave who forge ahead may not live long,” he says with a half-smile, quoting his own guiding maxim, “yet the cautious who stand still waste their lives in vain.”
For Lee, entrepreneurship is not a sprint but a state of being in a continuous and courageous race against time—searching for the next growth curve.
And that’s what makes him more than an entrepreneur. He is a builder of possibilities, an architect of human-centered innovation.
In Toff Lee’s world, machines may automate tasks, but it is the human spirit—curious, collaborative, and courageous that plays the winning streak when it comes to reshaping the human world.
And this is where Toff Lee’s story lives through the ages.
